African Explorer
An African slave traveled thousands of miles in the U.S. 500 years ago. He was the first visitor from the Old World to see the American West.

Estevanico, a man originally from Morocco, became a key character in the history of the exploration of the current territory of the United States. In the early 16th century, this African slave embarked on an epic journey that took him thousands of miles from the east coast of Florida to the west coast of the Pacific.
This journey, which lasted several years, allowed Estevanico to become the first visitor from the Old World to contemplate the North American West. Despite being a slave, his courage and determination led him to leave an indelible mark on the history of North American exploration.
Estevanico's feat is all the more remarkable considering the context in which it occurred. At that time, exploration of the New World was a slow and dangerous process, and few managed to reach the Pacific coast. However, Estevanico, with his African origin and slave status, proved that determination and willpower can overcome any obstacle.
